Much of the natural gas transported on the Kern River pipeline is consumed by cogeneration units to produce electricity and steam used in enhanced oil recovery operations in Kern County, California. Steam is injected into the field, enabling the heavy crude oil to be pumped to the surface. Shown is Field Supervisor Len Williamson at a site near Bakersfield, California. Kern River Gas Transmission's 904-mile system provides interstate transportation of Rocky Mountain and Canadian natural gas to markets in California, Nevada and Utah. Design capacity is 700 MMcfd. In January 1996, Williams acquired the remaining interest in this asset for $205 million; it formerly owned a 50 percent interest. Operating results for 1995 are included in investing income.

At Kern River pipeline, we are dedicated to top performance. Many of us took part in the birth of this pipeline, which went into service in 1992. We recently celebrated another milestone as The Williams Companies became full owner of this premier system. Built right from the start, the Kern River pipeline operates at capacity year-round. That's top performance.
