Key Points

  • We recorded our third consecutive year of outstanding financial performance in 1995.
  • Acquired ComLink, Inc., a New England voice and data systems integrator, in January 1996, increasing our customer base by about 14 percent, to more than 40,000.
  • Constructed a $7 million National Technical Resource Center in our new headquarters, the Transco Tower in Houston. The 45,000-square-foot center showcases our expanding capabilities.
  • Acquired an Internet services company in 1995 that provides development of home pages and maintenance of World Wide Web sites. Our Internet effort is in its infancy, but its growth is seemingly exponential. We will implement a multimillion-dollar system allowing easy access to the Internet by our entire customer base.
  • Announced a distribution/support agreement with Compression Labs, Inc. (CLI), a leading manufacturer of easy-to-use videoconferencing products, in 1996.
  • Also in 1996, we signed a five-year agreement with Ameritech, a Chicago-based communications company. The agreement opens managed-services opportunities for WilTel and Ameritech in certain markets across the nation.
  • In 1996, we will expand our capabilities and position the company in the mainstream of growth in the business communications industry. The data market we are entering is estimated at more than $17 billion - three times the voice side - and is growing at several times the rate foreseen for voice customer premise equipment, our core business.
  • Our largest capital expenditure in 1996 will involve total redesign of our companywide information systems. By midyear, our data platform should be operating throughout the country, complementing our voice communications infrastructure.
  • Even with the growth-related expenses, we still expect operating profit to improve in 1996. Our increased investment in employees, new product introductions, more comprehensive training and greater market recognition will help us participate in the more sophisticated data and merging computer/telephony markets while maintaining the high level voice services our customers have come to expect of WilTel.
