Potomac Expansion Project
During the past 50 years, Williams' Transco pipeline has been quietly, safely and reliably
delivering natural gas to its customers through its 10,500-mile pipeline system, extending
from Texas to New York.
The Transco pipeline is a major transporter of
natural gas in the Mid-Atlantic region, delivering about 25%
of the natural gas consumed in Virginia and 10 percent of the natural gas consumed in Maryland.
Demand for clean-burning natural gas in this region is steadily increasing. Clean-burning
natural gas has become the fuel of choice for homeowners, businesses and electric power
generators searching for ways to reduce air pollution. Natural gas is the cleanest burning
fossil fuel. Used in place of other, more polluting energy sources it can help improve the
air quality.
Williams is planning to expand its existing Transco pipeline to help meet the region's
growing need for clean energy. Known as the Potomac Expansion, this project is
being designed to create additional pipeline capacity by November 2007.
