Real-World Ready: How Three Interns Found Purpose at Williams

Adam Amiri, Carly Powers and Clifford Helgason were among 76 students who interned at Williams this summer.  Despite coming from different academic backgrounds, the three shared a goal: to gain real-world experience and sharpen their professional skills.

Throughout their time as interns, they were immersed in a dynamic environment that challenged them to think critically, collaborate effectively and adapt quickly to new situations.

Amiri, a management information systems major at Oklahoma State University, worked on the IT network team in the Tulsa office. “Working on the network team was like being the heartbeat of the whole company,” Amiri said. “We are doing work that can affect everyone at Williams, and it feels great to know I’m contributing something meaningful to the company.”

Powers, a student at Lackawanna College gained confidence in herself and was grateful to be a part of a collaborative team in Hop Bottom, Pennsylvania.

“At the beginning of the internship, I was a bit unsure of myself and hesitant to speak up, but over time, that changed,” she said. “A huge part of that growth came from being surrounded by a team where I felt comfortable asking questions and where team members were always willing to share their knowledge and experiences.”

Helgason, an engineering major at The University of Oklahoma who worked on the project execution team in Houston, sharpened his technical skills on real-world engineering tasks and also found himself stepping into a new role, leading the planning of a nonprofit event.

“The skills I learned in the project execution group not only strengthened my engineering background, but also helped me develop my project management abilities,” Helgason said. “I was able to put these skills into action when I and a few other interns organized a nonprofit event benefitting the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Houston.”

What made the internship especially valuable was the comprehensive programming offered to the students. Students were encouraged to participate in initiatives that spanned beyond their day-to-day tasks to become well-rounded employees. Mentorship sessions paired interns with experienced professionals who provided guidance and career advice, while networking events, team building games and etiquette lessons helped them build confidence and prepare for future opportunities.
