Williams’ NextGen Gas program measures and verifies natural gas emissions across the supply chain to ensure that natural gas is not only responsibly produced, but also gathered, processed, stored and transported to end users with the lowest environmental impact possible.
Why it matters
- It is increasingly important for the natural gas industry to demonstrate proof of low emissions performance by providing transparent and timely greenhouse gas emissions data, specifically for methane and carbon dioxide. We must show we are reducing emissions at the wellhead, across the gathering, processing and pipeline supply chain, all the way to your home or business.
- Handling one-third of the nation’s natural gas, Williams is positioned as one of the largest infrastructure providers between producers and consumers. This gives Williams unique visibility and access to how the gas molecules are produced, processed, transported and used.
How it works
- We use enhanced measurement practices and multiple monitoring technologies, including satellites, flyovers and sensing devices, as well as real-time internal operational data to more accurately and credibly quantify our emissions.
- To enable the certification of our emissions, Williams partners with Context Labs, which uses operational insights and block chain technology to track greenhouse gas emissions across our assets and operations. The low-emissions attributes of NextGen Gas are then validated by a major third-party auditing firm.
- This allows us to develop emissions insights and operational efficiencies down to the facility and equipment levels to further lower our carbon and methane intensities.

Next steps
- Williams, through its Sequent Energy Management business, is marketing certified, low-carbon NextGen Gas to utilities, LNG export facilities and for behind-the-meter power generation.
- In 2024, we successfully completed NextGen Gas transactions with 13 different counterparties, totaling 25 transactions and transferring more than 108 cumulative Bcf of emissions-certified gas.
