As manager of Strategy and Market Intelligence at Williams, Grace Scott leads energy market fundamentals research for corporate and commercial strategies and helps shape external messaging around the benefits of natural gas.

Susan Simpson, a communications specialist at Williams, interviewed her about her job and the value of inclusiveness in the workplace.

Simpson: Hi Grace, we work together quite a bit in telling the story of natural gas and its benefits not just in the United States, but globally. There’s much good news to share about reliable, affordable and clean natural gas, and your team helps me take complex topics and turn them into digestible facts.

How did you get started at Williams?

Scott: I began my journey at Williams 10 years ago as an analyst in the Market Intelligence department. It was here that I learned a tremendous amount about the industry and Williams’ business model thanks to an amazing team that had a culture of sharing, teaching and learning.

I developed a passion for communicating complex information in a clear and concise way and visualizing that information in PowerPoint. I also developed a passion for Williams and the important role that we play in the energy industry. I was able to draw the connection between my day-to-day work and the big picture.

I’m proud to work for a company that plays such a vital role in the energy sector that allows us to have so many daily conveniences and comforts such as electricity and home heating and cooking. I do not take these things for granted.

Simpson: Your next role was in Investor Relations. I remember how cool it was when you and other Williams colleagues got to ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange in 2022.

Scott: Yes, that was one of my proudest moments at Williams. I was the Manager of Investor Relations and we hosted Analyst Day at the NYSE. I was honored to be on the platform representing Williams.

And now I’m back to where it all started, managing a group of analysts on the Strategy and Market Intelligence team. I’m still learning what it takes to be a good leader but hope that I can be a strong mentor like others have been for me. I’ve had wonderful bosses, mentors and teammates at Williams and it has meant so much to me.

Simpson: You also are mom to two young boys! As a working parent, how do you juggle priorities? Do you have advice for other parents?

Scott: Being a corporate mom of two has been my biggest challenge to date. It’s hard to manage so much responsibility on my plate each day. I’ve learned that there’s only so much time in the day and you have to prioritize. I’m lucky to have such a strong support system from family and friends.

I like to stay organized at work by planning in advance when I can, delegating responsibilities, trusting teammates and creating a priorities list each day. At home, I focus on being present with my family. I also have to be intentional about carving out any personal time for myself.

Simpson: My final question is in the spirit of the natural gas facts we’ve worked on. Can you tell me some fun facts about Grace Scott?

Scott: Sure. Here are a few things.

  • I have an identical twin sister and a younger sister. Most of my family lives in Tulsa and we are close.
  • I played college soccer at the Illinois Institute of Technology on a full ride scholarship.
  • I met my husband, Brett, on a blind date, set up by friends. We got married in 2019.
  • And I love to travel. My favorite place I’ve been to is Oslo, Norway.

Simpson: Thanks for letting us feature you during Women’s History Month. As you know, Williams is celebrating our inclusive workforce during March with several events.

All employees are invited to a session with Oklahoma State University professor Dr. Brandy Thomas Wells about the women of Tulsa’s historic Black Wall Street. Additionally, the Women of Williams Employee Resource Group is collecting supplies for local service organizations at many office locations.

Scott: I love that Williams is celebrating the contributions, past and present, of women leaders. We have much to honor and learn!
